Prospective Students
The foundry engineering programme at the Montanuniversität Leoben is characterised by its strong practical focus combined with a solid grounding in fundamental knowledge. From the basics of solidification to the various casting processes, students learn which component properties to expect. These components are mainly used in lightweight construction and, in particular, in the automotive industry (powertrain and structural parts).
A strong practical focus is achieved through practical sessions, which are also held at the Austrian Foundry Institute (ÖGI), a leading European foundry research institute. Students have access to pilot plants for sand casting, permanent mould casting, low-pressure casting and die casting at the ÖGI, which are supplemented by equipment and software simulations at the department.
From the 5th semester onwards, students can accept sponsorships from foundry companies, which are arranged through the Association of Austrian Foundry Professionals (VÖG). At the same time, students receive the trade journal “Gießerei-Rundschau” free of charge. In addition, the department arranges industrial placements for students. This ensures that they always maintain a connection to the foundry industry and are therefore keenly sought after by companies.
